How to Identify The Unmet Emotional Needs Behind Emotional Eating by Georgie Beames

Did you know that every time you are engaging in emotional eating, you are trying to get a need met from the food?

So let’s unpack it and find out what need you are trying to get met from eating in this way.

When I start working with women,  they will just think that they’ve got no willpower or self control or they just love food too much.

And that’s why they keep going back to certain foods and certain eating behaviors.

Now here’s the thing: we are typically going for either the same foods or the same eating behaviors.

So the same foods look like the choc chip biscuits or the salted caramel ice cream. The same behaviors are around:

 “I’m alone and secret eating”

“I’m in the car on the way home from work.”

We have these patterns and if we’ve been eating like this for some time, our brain is wired in this way.

So I want to share with you that it’s actually not the food that we love.

We have just a really strong emotional connection to these specific foods or these specific eating behaviors.

There’s a need that we are trying to get met from the food and the eating that we are just never going to satisfy.

That’s often why, with this food, we’re eating it really quickly and we are shoving it down. It‘s like we want more and more of it.  It’s like we’re never satisfied.

So, I want you to start to think about the types of food or the types of eating behaviors that are playing out for you at certain times of the day. Ask yourselves: “what needs am I trying to get met?”

What needs are you trying to get met?

For many women it’s around:

“I’m after relief.”

“I’m after me time.”

“I’m after relaxation.”

“I’m after comfort.”

So that’s what I want you to start to raise your awareness around.

Rather than just focusing on the food:

“Oh my gosh, I just love chocolate too much. I can’t say no to cheese, I have no willpower”,

I want you to raise your awareness. So next time you feel like eating at three o’clock in the afternoon, I want you to tune in to yourself before you start eating and be aware of what is it that you are craving? What feeling are you craving?

And I want you to start there.

The more you can go to the feeling before the food, you’re one step closer on the path to food freedom.

I hope this has been helpful. I’d love to hear what you’re craving. If you want more information about this approach to food freedom, click below and check it out. I’d love to be able to show you more on this path.
